Tai Tzu Ying, one of the greatest women’s singles badminton players the World has seen, is epitomized with an unsurpassable record. She reached the peak of the World rankings on 1 December 2016 with her rank not being disturbed for 72 weeks till 18 April 2018. In 2018, she could not defend her 2017 Singapore Open title and hence lost the World no. 1 rank to Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. However, after defeating Chen Yufei in the very next Asian Championships she regained her title.
In her two spells of carrying the World no. 1 rank for 137 weeks, she surpassed the previous record of 124 weeks set by the Chinese player, Li Xuerui. Overall, her record stands 148 weeks as World no. 1(as of 17/3/2020) with 97575 points, the highest by any women single’s player. Throughout her career, she has won 10 World Tour titles, 12 Superseries titles and 3 Grand Prix titles throughout her career.

In 2018, after winning the Asian Championship and Denmark Open, she accumulated 1,01517 points and became the second player in woman singles to break 1,00,000 points after Li Xuerui. Also, she broke the record of a longest winning streak with 31 consecutive matches won, while the former record was of 30 matches by Li Xuerui of China.
Despite all the success, she still misses out on a World Championship and Olympics title. Out of the five World Championships she played, she has reached only till the quarterfinals of all of them.
However, the Chinese Taipei ace accomplished her third All England title in 2020 as she avenged last year’s final loss to Chen Yu Fei. There was a shift of her playing pattern from a purely attacking style to a more counter-attacking approach with a defence style of game. This change was necessitated because of the increasing ability of her opponents like Carolina Marin and Chen Yu Fei. This was her fourth straight final at the All England and with this victory, she became the first women’s singles player since Xie Xingfang to win three titles.
Tai has been part of the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics. In both the games, she did not go beyond the Round of 16. According to the Race to Tokyo- BWF Olympic Qualification list (as of 14/4/2020), the 25-year-old is ranked World no. 2 and will most likely make it to the Olympics.
With such performances, Tai Tzu Ying has given birth to new records in International Badminton and is one of the most exemplary women singles player of this era.
