Canada Open, Treesa, and Gayatri duo advance, while Rajawat goes to the quarterfinals of the men’s singles.
Indian badminton talent Priyanshu Rajawat showcased his impressive form by advancing to the men’s singles quarterfinals at the Canada Open with a convincing victory over Japan’s Takuma Obayashi.
Ranked 39th in the world, Rajawat defeated the 33rd-ranked Obayashi with a score of 21-19, 21-11 in just 38 minutes on Thursday night, securing his spot in the last-eight round. He will now face the top-seeded Anders Antonsen from Denmark.
In addition to Rajawat, the third-seeded Indian women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, also moved forward to the quarterfinals. The duo overcame a challenging start to beat Denmark’s Natasja P Anthonisen and the Netherlands’ Alyssa Tirtosentono 17-21, 21-7, 21-8 in a 48-minute match.
Next, Treesa and Gayatri will compete against the Chinese Taipei pair of Pei Shan Hsieh and En-Tzu Hung.
Unfortunately, other Indian participants saw their journeys end in the second round. In women’s singles, Anupama Upadhyaya and Tanya Hemanth were both defeated. Anupama put up a strong fight against Canada’s Michelle Li but ultimately lost 14-21, 21-17, 13-21, while Tanya was defeated by third-seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand in straight sets, 11-21, 13-21.
In men’s doubles, the Indian team of Krishna Prasad Garaga and K Sai Pratheek lost to Chinese Taipei’s Bing-Wei Lin and Ching Heng Su with a score of 21-19, 18-21, 17-21. Similarly, the Indian mixed doubles duo of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde were ousted by the eighth-seeded Chinese Taipei pair, Cheng Kuan Chen and Yin-Hui Hsu, with scores of 15-21, 21-19, 9-21.
