India Secures Quarterfinal Berth with Dominant 5-0 Victory Over England in Thomas Cup 2024


India secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the esteemed Thomas Cup 2024, held in Chengdu, China, with an impressive 5-0 victory over England in their second group stage match. The Indian shuttlers displayed dominance throughout, clinching every match to seal their triumph.

The Indian team fielded a lineup similar to their previous encounter against Thailand, with Kiran George stepping in for HS Prannoy. George notably contributed in the singles matches, while the formidable doubles pairs of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, along with M.R. Arjun and Dhruv Kapila, continued to exhibit their prowess in the doubles matches.

In the opening match, HS Prannoy swiftly overcame England’s Harry Huang with a commanding 21-15, 21-15 victory, setting the tone for India’s success. The dynamic duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty faced a tough challenge against Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in the first doubles encounter but eventually secured a hard-fought win with a scoreline of 21-17, 19-21, 21-15.

Former World No. 1, Kidambi Srikanth, extended India’s lead by comfortably defeating England’s Nadeem Dalvi with a score of 21-16, 21-11 in the second singles match. The duo of M.R. Arjun and Dhruv Kapila continued India’s dominance in the second doubles, overcoming Rory Easton and Alex Green with a score of 21-17, 21-19.

Kiran George then sealed the victory for India with a commanding performance against Cholan Kayan, winning the last singles match with a scoreline of 21-18, 21-12.

With this convincing win, India has secured their spot in the knockout stages. However, their final group stage encounter against Indonesia on May 1 will determine the group topper
