The Most Lucrative Racquet Sport for Female Athletes Worldwide

In recent years, pickleball has emerged as a global sensation, revolutionizing opportunities for female athletes. According to data released by the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA), this fast-growing racquet sport has become the highest-paying sport for women.

Record-Breaking Earnings

Female players on the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball earned an average annual income of $260,000 (over ₹2 crore) in 2024. These earnings surpass the annual pay of WNBA athletes and are more than double the average salary of players in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Professional pickleball generated $30 million in total payouts for players this year, split evenly between men and women. This financial boom has established 2024 as a landmark year, setting the stage for sustained growth in the years to come.

Equal Opportunities on the Court

What sets pickleball apart is its inclusivity. The sport allows men and women to compete together in mixed doubles, fostering equality and collaboration. According to Samin Odhwan, Chief Strategy Officer of the United Pickleball Association, female athletes often outperform expectations in mixed doubles, where traditional strategies of targeting women as “weaker” players have proven ineffective.

“There is no other sport where men and women can compete on the court together and have an equal opportunity to impact the game. Statistical analysis shows that women often outperform men in key scenarios, disproving outdated strategies,” said Odhwan.
